O.2.1-7 Young people’s perspectives on integrating targeted physical activity in substance use treatment: implications for practice

Abstract Purpose Problematic substance use (SU) in young people is a global health concern and leads to difficulties key life areas. Rates of problematic SU are highest aged 15-25 years. Physical activity (PA) may reduce (ie., alcohol, tobacco, illicit use), provide less stigmatizing treatment option. Yet, research on this approach population remains limited, targeted PA rarely routinely implemented for people, policy lacks responsivity priority. Method A quantitative survey (n = 145 Australians) qualitative focus group 4) were conducted analyzed. Eligibility criteria included: i) years; ii) moderate or severe risk substance-related other problems (assessed by WHO ASSIST); iii) prior access willing engage future treatment. The purpose was explore people’s perspectives the (1) acceptability, (2) experienced barriers, (3) preferences regarding integration as an adjunct intervention existing services. Results Survey data showed that 97.8% found preference-driven interventions acceptable within practice. further 94.9% believed PA-based appropriate effective (95.6%) reducing their SU, expressed willingness these interventions. Barriers exercise-induced fatigue, cost PA, lack motivation, use, guidance. Interview clear preference highly tailored, planned but unsupervised interventions, with frequent check-ins. Additional directives, passionate motivating facilitators behavior change. Preference-driven perceived sense personal accomplishment care from service providers. Conclusion be among offer non-stigmatizing treatments. Factors might influence translation into practice identified involved study, highlighting importance including stakeholders design delivery.
